John Philp

Hometown: Oakville

Occupation: Merchant Banker

Warrior: Jason Hammerschmidt

Motivation: In September, my sister Margaret passed away after a 41/2 year battle with breast cancer. What was important about Margaret was not how she died but rather how she lived. In her work as a journalist, in her community and with her family, Margaret confronted issues and challenges with a phenomenal drive and determination. She had the highest expectations of herself which were tempered by an sense of optimism and compassion. She inspired the people around her by her determination and by her warmth and spirit. Margaret fought her cancer with the same drive, determination and humour. She brought to her fight her journalistic instinct for uncovering information and an unrelenting drive to use nutrition, exercise and a strong attitude as tools to fight her disease. Wellspring played a key role for Margaret as a source of information, guidance and support.

Road biking is a new activity for me. I take on the Cancervive journey, and all the training to prepare for it, with my sister's spirit, determination and humour. My hope is that I might meet and overcome this challenge and, by doing so, that I might help other Margarets who are relying on the incredible support that Wellspring offers in their own battles with this disease.

My Warrior is Jason Hammerschmidt Jason was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2005. Jason navigated courageously through treatment with a lot of help from his wife, family, and staff at Princess Margaret Hospital. The 2 year Dana-Farber Cancer Institute protocol for his cancer left Jason with serious post treatment complications which have required further treatment, surgeries and physiotherapy. Jason is a true warrior meeting all his challenges with optimism and courage. All Jason’s post treatment examinations to date have been positive. With a renewed outlook, Jason is "living life version 2.0" Jason is a true warrior and cancer survivor.
